What did I make? I made a fun shaggy edge (or rag or frayed edge) quilt! The fabric that gave me the initial colour scheme was 'Backyard Baby'. I then added some Pearl bracelets, Kona solids, chevrons, some turtles, bears and a few orange and grey fabrics to make an I-Spy style quilt.

There are foxes, snakes, bugs in jars, woodpeckers, snails, turtles, cars and many more creatures and critters to find! This quilt is between a cot and baby size quilt and will make a great play mat too! I love making these quilts - they are quite time consuming but the finished effect is great! I have a plaid one that I have on my bed all the time and it is one of my favourites! This style of quilt washes up really well too. This one has been washed three times (in a pillow case to prevent the threads clogging my machine) and dried in the tumble dryer three times to fray-up the edges. It will only get better and better each time it is washed.
How did I make it? I made each square 5" and placed a 4" piece of wadding between two of the 5" squares and sewed an X across corner to corner. Each square sandwich has the same fabric on top and on the bottom so the design on the back of the quilt is the same as the front. This just makes it easier to decide layout!

These quilts are so versatile to make. You can decide on any square size and even use up scraps of wadding that are left over from other projects. Charm packs are great to use - and would save you cutting all those squares!

Thanks for explaining to a non-quilter like me, how to make a rag quilt.I didn't realise the wadding needed to be smaller than the squares. The colours you have used work so well together. A great quilt!!!

I love your quilt! This has become a favorite pattern of mine--I have made several for baby gifts and will be showing mine on the last day of the hop. I basically made mine the same way except I don't use any batting in mine, and it still is very warm with 2 layers of fleece. I've used all sizes of blocks. Great job. Some little boy is going to be very happy!

I saw a similar quilt in a magazin, with these frayed edges. Is it enough to makeit from "normal" patchwork fabric, is it frayed enough? I've heard it is better tio use flannel fabric. What do you think? I would like to do my version for myself :) Thanks for the chance to win, I also need some Christmas scraps.

I love those quilts. My friends and I made them for our kids to go to college. They were one of the first quilts I made. Still have them, the flannel ones get softer and softer all the time. I am a happy follower on google friends.

What a cool way to do an I spy. My grandson (now 21) would have loved one of these when he was a little kid. He had a fascination with fringe. He would grab a terry kitchen towel with fringe from the drawer if he forgot his beloved blankie.
